Katie smiled at the older of the two women as she came to stand beside her.

“That was some race,” Karla commented, earning a nod from Katie.

“I’m glad that Ethan had his two place in it, even if he didn’t manage a first in this race, though I do hope your filly manages to break her maiden!”

Karla smiled and nodded, glancing out over the track.

“That would be wonderful. The morning workout we’ve seen of hers looked promising and Ethan seems happy with how she’s training. It’ll be nice to see her move forward in her racing career and that obviously starts with winning one. So what do you do with yourself?” Karla asked curiously.

Katie was surprised by the woman’s interest, but pleased. She seemed genuine.

“Well… I work maintenance at this track, actually. But really, I’m an artist. I’m just building up a portfolio at the moment alongside work at the track.”

Karla’s gaze met hers keenly.

“Really? How interesting. What do you draw?”

“Mostly nature and horses. Sometimes the odd racing scene,” she said vaguely, thinking of the racehorse trainer drawing.

Karla nodded thoughtfully, assessing Katie slowly. She gave her a smile and leaned forward with a conspiratorial wink.

“You know,” she said quietly, “I’m glad you’re here today. It’s good for Jessica to see that Ethan is taken. I must say that my little sister has been quite smitten with the man since she first met him. Ethan has been such a darling, too.”

Katie nodded slowly, her mind trying to process the statement. She glanced over at Ethan and noted that Jessica was earnestly talking to him, her hand brushing over his arm a couple of times. Ethan nodded politely and continued the conversation.

Katie refrained from frowning as she questioned if Jessica had been any more obvious in her interest. And had Ethan discouraged her? Or just been aloof and polite? And more importantly, did he consider himself taken or were Jessica’s advances welcome?

Suddenly she wanted the racehorse trainer all to herself – if only to ask him some questions. She was enjoying dating Ethan, but she wasn’t interested in sharing – and if he was, she wanted out. Seeming to notice her discomfort Karla gave her a reassuring smile.

“Don’t worry, he’s been a perfect gentleman and I don’t think Jessica has been overt in her interest. Hopefully seeing you here with him will allow her to see that he’s taken.”

Again Katie nodded, unsure what to say. In time the group of four headed back down to where Ethan’s horses were prepared before a race. Blushing Rose was standing quietly, though her head was up and her ears pricked forward in interest at the scene around her.

Karla interacted easily with Ethan’s staff as she observed her young horse being saddled for the race. Katie noted quietly that Jessica stood a little away from the horse and had her eye on Ethan most of the time. Katie had a sinking feeling in her stomach. She assessed the young woman, admitting that she was beautiful with a figure that she seemed all too happy to flaunt.
